The purpose of an XML sitemap is to make it simple for search engines to find all of the pages on your website. Some pages can be buried deep in your navigation system, or not have a link that Google can follow.

One reason that you want Google to find as many of your pages as possible, is that content is king, and the more you have … that is worthwhile, the wider variety of terms you may rank well for. It also helps to prevent pages from being deindexed, if your navigation system changes.

It is important to keep your XML sitemap updated though, as it can also be a source of broken links on your website, if old pages are deleted, or URL’s change.

So how do you generate an XML sitemap free and easily online? we have used this website for years. www.xml-sitemap.com. it has a limit to the amount of pages you can scan, but all you have to do is enter your domain and wait a few seconds and hey presto, download your sitemap.

If you have a larger website, more that 500 pages, like many eCommerce stores, it might not work for you. If you need a large XML sitemap, then try www.web-site-map.com/. It lets you generate up to 3500 pages for free.

Of course you could also pay for a subscription service, but why not use the free one when it is there. Once you have your sitemap, all you have to do is upload it to your root directory and you’re done.

If your site is WordPress, there are plug ins that you can use that update your sitemap periodically, which makes this process even easier.
